Things that don’t suck, yet anyway 2006 January 12 17:46
Posted by diamond in : Work, Random , 1 comment so far- My new nokia 6020 phone. Yes, it’s basic (no bluetooth, only a vga camera, not 3g, yadda yadda), but the interface is quite nicely designed, and it does it’s job well. It’s nice to have a small secondary phone (bring on a treo 650! -) that so far at least interfaces very nicely with the pc (running windows at least. nokia suite has improved vastly since i last gave up on it in disgust).
- Gmail. I’ve had a gmail account for a couple of years (i think. *checks*. signed up 2004-04-13. almost 2 years i guess). All i’ve done in that time is have most of my skynet mail being copied to there, for 2 reasons. 1) in case skynet ever loses all my mail, 2) because gmail is supposed to be kinda neat at handling large amounts of email, and i reckon the 6000+ mails i have there at this stage make a decent base for seeing how well this works out -). Yesterday, i set up my nonado mail to do the same thing, for a third reason. The ability to search all my mail _quickly_ for certain keywords or phrases is invaluable.
- Being back at work. Mikael was in today (briefly. busy busy guy. also looks like he’s nearing the end of the cluster headache attacks), and we discussed what stuff i could be working on over the next few days, so now i have something to get stuck into. I’m interested to see how this works out. I’ve said that i’m going to try working a few hours in work in the morning, and then at home in the afternoon. This allows me to crash on the bed for 20-30 minutes if i get tired, which happens most days in the afternoon.

Late xmas presentage
Posted by diamond in : Random , add a commentWhen i went home for christmas, i’d bought a present for my little sister (lydia, 13) as christmas is very important to kids of that age. For the rest, i defaulted to my usual position on present buying which is: if i can think of a really good present that i can afford for the person, then i’ll buy it; if not, i won’t.
Over the holidays, my mother kept nicking my koss portapro headphones. When i asked her about it, she said they were the first headphones she’d found that she could comfortably wear while wearing glasses (which is pretty much all of her waking hours).
I had a stunningly insightful thought and ordered her a pair off ebay for christmas (though admitedly this was on about the 27th, but hey, it’s the thought that counts ,-) and told her that they’d arrive in a week or two. Last wednesday i got a call from my mother. A package from germany had arrived for her, the invoice was for the correct amount, but the contents were… distinctly un-headphone like.
The seller was german, so after putting it off for a few days, i wrote an email (with the gracious help of cjb (thanks!)) basically saying that i’d ordered $x but received $y. I was a little nervous about this, i’ve never had to send an ebay item back before, and wasn’t particularly keen about lots of hassle. Turns out i was wasting my time. I’ll summarise below the response i got:
Thanks for your mail. We apologise, warehouse must have screwed up. Correct item is in the post today. Keep the ipod cover as compensation for this error, if you don’t have an ipod you can always sell it on ebay -)
The above reply was sent 21 minutes after my original email on monday. Got a call from my mother today, headphones arrived. Dunno about you, but i’m very unsecretly delighted with the unexpectedly high level of service. Molc isn’t complaining either as he’s blagged a free ipod cover.
