The weekend of dublin 2006 March 1 10:39

And yea, verily, it was busy. After work on saturday i headed up to the big smoke and met up with dredg ‘n ducky (d&d. cute eh? -). We went to aya for sushi 55 (where you have 55 minutes to eat as much sushi as you can cram down your gullet). It was superb as always (though lacking in slabs of salmon during the period we were there. ah well).

The official reason for me being in dublin was to get CACert assured. Noirin (thank you!) had arranged a meetup, with 2 CACert assurers present. We ended up meeting in a pub in stillorgan after some plan changing due to the riots earlier that day. I’d been told that conall (of tcd netsoc fame, though he protests innocence) and colmmacc (of redbrick, heanet, apache fame) were to be there. And, indeed, they were. I however didn’t recognise colm (whom i’ve met before) for a good 25 minutes, and was even pondering asking noirin if colm was going to turn up. Eventually the penny-dropped. Colm has lost at least 3 stone since i’d last seen him (and i’d even _read_ that blog post). Anyway, thanks to both conall and colmmacc for assuring CACert that i (a) to exist and (b) am who i say i am.

The other person with us in the pub, whom i didn’t know, was the wonderful Suw Charman (and someday soon she’ll even figure out how to spell her own name ,-). Evidently i made something of an impression. This is a txt i received the next day from noirin:

Tj, “How did you find the Book of Kells?”. Suw, “Noirin showed me where it was.” – we agreed that she’s spent too much time with you!

*grin*

Noirin (and family) very kindly provided accomadation for the night (they offered a bed, but said if i really wanted it could also sleep on the floor). I opted for the bed in the end.

On sunday i got up 12ish, dropped suw and noirin off at random place in the city centre (random because it wasn’t where i had meant to go ,-) damn one-way streets and unmarked lanes). Now, for those of you who know me, the next part is quite shocking. I went clothes shopping(!), on my own(!), without being under duress(!), and bought 2 pairs of pants spending more than €15 on both(!). I know, i know, it does indeed seem like i was possessed by the spirit of someone else, possibly even someone else who likes clothes shopping. Still, at least it’s over now, and i can try to pretend it was just a bad dream.

Anyway.

After i was finished, dru and atlas arrived in town. I proceeded to ‘help’ meeting them by giving ‘helpful’ answers (helpful in the bigbro tradition, pedantic in the diamond tradition).

atlas: “Do you want to meet us at the bottom of grafton street, or will we walk up to you?”

diamond: “Yes.”

Surprised, anyone? -)

While they were busy trying to figure out some way of getting a straight answer, i snuck up behind them. It wasn’t quite as l33t as i was hoping, they just turned around and said hi -( My disappointment was quickly assuaged by a trip to a crêpe café. Mmmm tastylicious, or as dredg would say, “tastes like happy”.

We then went to see Walk The Line, which was really good. I’m beginning to suspect that Joaquin Phoenix can in fact act. Afterwards, for want of an actual plan, i dropped atlas home to clontarf, and michelle home to skerries. I tried to display my amazing memory for remembering routes (having only been to michelle’s house once before, at about 3am 2 years ago). It kinda worked ,-)

I finally got to see the fabled bed that michelle has invested lots of her life savings into. Let me just say this: i lay on it for 30 seconds and had to get up asap. One more second on it and i don’t think i could ever have torn myself away fron it. Wow.

I was allowed to take one photo in her room, so here was my pick: i call it “The shrine to bad taste“. It’s hard to summarise the awfulness of the contents. Sure, you can skim it and see things of note like the lord of the rings trilogy, but you’re missing pretty much everything else. Let me just say there are Mills & Boon books there. *fear*

At this stage it was getting pretty late, so i ran away home. On the way i called into cheez for about 2.5 hours. He fed me pancakes -) The weekend really was a culinary wonderous thing.

Right. I’d better get my ass to college (he’s doing a degree in donkey…)
