Seen the other day in the window a local computer shop:

gigabit switch, uh huh

The box proclaims it to be a 26-port 10/100/1000Mbps Copper Gigabit Switch. Now, i may be naieve, but i would expect that the product would therefore have 26 ports, all of which are capable at operating at up to GigE speeds. Indeed. However, when you read the much smaller product information text, you see this gem:

2x 10/100/1000Mbps Auto-Negotiation, Auto-MDIX Gigabit Ports
24x 10/100Mbps Auto-Negotiation, Auto-MDIX Fast Ethernet Ports

Uh huh. So, that’d be a 24x 100Mbps switch, with 2x GigE ports, something worth probably about 1/3 as what the large text would have you believe. ‘Fun’.
