Nautilus and eoin 2006 August 31 15:57

When you mount a samba drive using nautilus, it places a shortcut on your desktop of the form ‘$sharename on $host’. When however i mounted the share ’steve’ on ‘eoin-brazils-machine’, the name was truncated, leading to the rather amusing:

Rang one of the recruiters in google, they said they’ve not heard anything back from the US yet, so it’ll most likely be tomorrow. If i haven’t heard anything by 17:00 tomorrow i’m to ring them back and they’ll make further enquires. After 3 months, waiting is wearing a little thin.

In response to an email i had sent to the irish linux user’s group, the linux gazette contacted me asking if i’d mind if they publised it. I said “Sure, fire away”, and they said “Thanks. Can you send us a brief bio?”. I hadn’t quite expected that, but decided to give it a go anyway. Here’s what i sent to them:

Attempted bio:

Stephen ‘Captain Pedantic Pants’ Shirley is a quiet student[0] with an appetite for sanely configured, maintainable systems. He was first introduced to linux in 1996 with redhat 4.1, and has since progressed through suse, mandrake and debian, seeking enlightenment. He is now involved in the ubuntu project, and is the head admin of the University of Limerick computer society (skynet.ie). Currently finishing a MSc through research in the aforementioned UL, he’s looking forward to a fulfilling life of bending unix boxen to his will, whilst striking down inaccuracies wherever he finds them.

I was hoping to get a final answer from google yesterday on whether they’d like to hire me or not, but having waited till 16:30, i decided to ring them myself, only to be told that it will be another week. Apparently they hadn’t quite gotten everything together last week for the deadline, so it’s only been submitted properly to upper management this week, and there’s a week turnaround for this sort of thing. I don’t mind the waiting much, but not having been told about the delay is annoying. Oh well, it’ll make it a full 3 months.
