Girlfriend now also complains that she was only joking when she suggested the above mention and that i wasn’t meant to type it. Sheesh.
I’m available by mobile if anyone needs more girlfriend-related whining.

I was worried about jet-lag 2006 November 22 18:40
Posted by diamond in : Health , 1 comment so farNo longer. For the last 3 days in california, i started getting up at about 05:40, to try and lessen the jet lag when i flew home on monday/Tuesday. As i was flying out at 16:30 california time, and landing in london at 02:00 california time, i needed to be sleepy in the early evening if i was going to be able to sleep on the flight.
That kinda didn’t work out.
I didn’t get to sleep on the flight at all, nor on the flight to dublin afterwards. I finally did fall asleep at about midnight last night after being awake for 34 hours. As such, the 8-hour time difference between here and california is entirely outweighed by the amount of sleep deprivation, so once that’s sorted, i’ll be on irish time anyway ,-) It’s like a good plan, only much much worse.

Posted by diamond in : Random, Work , 3 commentsI got pulled over by the mountain view police on the way to work this morning. The reasons given were:
- Failing to yield to oncoming traffic at a juntion
- Failing to yield to a pedestrian on a crossing
Oops. The latter is definetely true, i didn’t spot the pedestrian until i was well past (nor was i aware of the exact laws on how pedestrian crossings work over here). The former is debatable, i thought i had cleared the junction in plenty of time, but i wasn’t about to debate it with an american policeman -)
He was very polite, told me his name and why he’d pulled me over, asked to see my license, registration and proof of insurance, asked how long i had been over here, then went off to check them. He came back and asked me why was i here, when i replied i worked for google and was over on training, he replied with “So.. you’re over here a lot then yeah?”, to which i hastily replied that i’d only started working for them about 6 weeks ago.
He finally told me that he was going to let me off without citation, and explained very clearly the rules that i had broken. I went on my way, shaken but not stirred.
Fry, wash
Posted by diamond in : Health, Random , add a commentExhaustion, unfamiliar traffic patterns, confusing and/or misleading road signs managed to turn this into this. I’ve normally got an excellent sense of direction, and i’ve driven most of this route before, which is why the end result is quite so remarkable. This whole getting-up-at-05:43-to-try-and-lessen-the-jet-lag-on-Tuesday lark is pretty tough going.
What’s also scary is that the washing machine in this apartment did a full wash cycle in the time i took me to plot out my meanderings; 20 minutes. I’m afraid to look too closely in case it’s nuclear powered.
Ssh with host-based authentication 2006 November 19 19:13
Posted by diamond in : Skynet , 1 comment so farThe documentation for this appears to be badly scattered, so i thought i’d collect the bits i’d found. The most useful reference by far was, unsurprisingly, on the website of an o’reilly book: SSH: The Secure Shell (The Definitive Guide). However, it’s slightly out of date, and doesn’t cover a one of the important steps.
What i wanted to do was allow any users on host A be able to ssh to host B using ssh v2 and be automatically logged in. So, these are the steps i took:
- On A, i added the following to /etc/ssh/ssh_config:
Host *
EnableSSHKeysign yes
Host B.example.com
HostbasedAuthentication yes
- Also on A, I made sure that ssh-keysign was installed and suid root
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 131640 2006-10-31 23:03 /usr/lib/ssh-keysign
- On B, i set the following config options in /etc/ssh/sshd_config:
IgnoreRhosts yesRemember to reload the sshd config after editing
HostbasedAuthentication yes
- On B, i added the fqdn of A to /etc/ssh/shosts.equiv:
A.exmaple.com - On B, i used the following to add the public RSA key of A to ssh_known_hosts:
ssh-keyscan -vt dsa A.example.com >> /etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts
Note: the fqdn of A used above has to be the same as the result of a reverse dns lookup on it’s IP.
And that’s all folks.
